West Coast Seeds Gardening Guide

School Garden Resource 2018-2019 (Surrey School District)

Honouring Memories Planting Dreams - Celebrated in May and June, Honouring Memories, Planting Dreams invites individuals and organizations to join in reconciliation by planting heart gardens in their communities. Heart gardens honour residential school survivors and their families, as well as the legacy of the Truth and Reconciliation Commission of Canada. Each heart represents the memory of a child lost to the residential school system, and the act of planting represents that individual’s commitment to finding their place in reconciliation. In 2017, more than 4500 hearts were planted in gardens across Canada.

Hovander Homestead Park, Ferndale, W.A.

The following pictures were taken at Hovander Homestead Park.  There are several gardens with different themes including:
  • Native Plant Garden
  • Children's Storybook Garden
  • Pollinator Garden
  • Sunflower House
  • Compost Centre
  • What's for Breakfast Garden
Food grown in the gardens are donated to a local food bank.

From an educators point of view, these gardens provide excellent insight into the interconnectedness of all living things and a link to literacy and gardening.   We've categorized some of the photos.  My favourite garden is the "Breakfast Garden".

Native Plants (to Pacific Northwest Coast - notice many of these plants are used as Indigenous medicines)
